“Abby” was six months old and had a congenital heart defect. When she went into the hospital for scheduled heart surgery, she was a happy, bouncy baby girl with a full life ahead of her. When she came out of the hospital, she was severely brain damaged, ventilator dependant, and only expected to live a few months. Because of her mother’s constant care, Abby actually hung on for another two years before quietly passing away.
What happened to Abby was the result of a poorly designed medical product. Her surgery required that Abby be hooked up to a heart bypass machine. Unfortunately for Abby, the first thirty-seven minutes she was on bypass, the tubes were connected to her heart backwards. Because the two tubes were not properly labeled, the surgeons did not know which tube should take blood out of her heart and which tube should put oxygenated blood back in. For over half-an-hour, Abby’s brain was deprived of oxygen.
Abby’s condition was very taxing on her family, both financially and emotionally. Thankfully, we were able to reach a settlement with the manufacturer that provided some assistance to Abby’s family.
