A perforated bowel occurs when your intestinal wall ruptures, allowing its contents to flood the rest of the abdominal cavity. This condition can lead to sepsis or blood infection. If not treated immediately, it can result in death.

Causes of Bowel Perforation

The most common causes of bowel perforation are:

  • Traumatic injury
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Appendicitis
  • Gastrointestinal cancer
  • Diverticulitis

Symptoms of Bowel Perforation

The symptoms include:

  • High fever
  • Nausea
  • Severe abdominal pain that gets worse when you move
  • Intense vomiting

These symptoms can be very severe and require immediate medical attention. If the vomiting is not treated, it can cause dehydration. Failure to treat a perforated bowel will lead to more serious health complications.

Bowel Perforation Caused by Malpractice

Most perforated bowels resulting from medical malpractice occur during a colonoscopy. Doctors need to take precautions when performing a colonoscopy if you have a preexisting colon or rectal disease, or if other medical procedures are being performed at the same time as the colonoscopy.

It is the doctor’s responsibility to take precautionary measures to prevent a rupture of your bowel during surgery. If he fails to do so, he is guilty of malpractice. The doctor is also required to examine your bowel during and immediately following surgery in the region to make sure there are no perforations. If he does not recognize the perforation immediately, it can lead to very serious health consequences and a lengthy hospital stay.

If you have suffered a bowel perforation as the result of your doctor’s negligence, you are entitled to receive compensation for your damages. You may be able to recoup all additional medical expenses brought on by the condition, and you can potentially collect damages for pain and suffering as well.
